Better Asset Utilisation at Kaitimako Switching Station

Client Name: Transpower New Zealand

Strategy & Planning: yes

Project Delivery: yes

Design: no

Technical Services: no

Project Overview:

The Kaitimako station was established to support greater utilisation of exisiting transmission assets in the Bay of Plenty, one of New Zealands fastest growing regions.

When planning this project Transpower recognised that the demand forecasts for the region were still relatively high, therefore ensured that should it be needed, further equipment can be installed relatively easily to meet any future growth.

The project involved building two platforms, one 110kV and one 220kV. The 110kV has been fitted with equipment, however the 220kV will remain bare until new equipment is needed when demand exceeds the capability of the 110kV switchyard.

A new transmission tower was also installed to connect the switchyards to the existing high voltage lines.

Edison Delivery:

Edison was involved in all aspects of the project delivery, including environmental consents, procurement of major equipment and tendering all the work streams.

The range of contracted services included detailed design, civil site works, roading, drainage and cut to waste of platform, steel work supply and erection, primary equipment installation and commissioning.

Client Feedback:

“My congratulations go to all of the Transpower staff, contractors and consultants who helped get this project to completion. Thank you also to the surrounding residents who were supportive of the project and the local iwi who worked with us. The new switching station will be beneficial for the Bay of Plenty area going into the future.”
