Hydro Generator Transformer Replacement

Hydro Generator Transformer Replacement Hydro Generator Transformer Replacement

Project Overview:

Mighty River Power is undertaking a replacement programme of the power transformers at its hydro power stations throughout New Zealand. In 2009/2010 four 11/220kV transformers where replaced - three at Maraetai and one at Whakamaru power stations.

The existing transformers were single phase units while the new ones are three phase. This technology upgrade was a key challenge for this project, requiring significant civil modifications to be undertaken at each site to accommodate the new units.

Edison Delivery:

Edison provided Mighty River Power with project delivery and technical support for all transformer replacements.

The project delivery role included resolving daily site queries and issues, issuing of notice to contractors, reporting on site progress to Mighty River Power management, ensuring complete installation works were completed, liaising with station staff, contractor and major equipment suppliers, confirmation of payment claims from the contractor.

Edison was the site coordinator for the work at Whakamaru and also became involved in work at Maraetai for the transformer upgrades.Edison provided an excellent service in terms of coordinating the people involved, the contractor, consultants and Mighty River Power & ABB site staff, as well as reporting back to the Mighty River Power project manager.
