Growing New Zealand’s electrical engineering talent pool

A shortage of skilled talent and growth in the electricity supply industry is placing increased pressure on recruitment and retention of professionals across New Zealand’s energy sector.

Two of Edison’s strategic priorities are to increase the diversity of our team and grow New Zealand’s electrical engineering talent pool, as head-hunting professionals from one organisation to another is not a sustainable recruitment strategy over the long term.

Between June 2022 and April 2023, we welcomed five international recruits to Edison – three Senior Design Engineers and two Senior Project Managers.

Building a team with diverse backgrounds, perspectives and capabilities ensures Edison brings diverse thinking and approaches to projects, whilst ensuring our recruitment is sustainable and supports the anticipated future growth in our sector.

Our clients are already experiencing the benefits of increased capacity and diversity of thought on their projects. From solar farms in the Far North to Network planning in the South Island - our new team members are making an impact and receiving great feedback.

Relocation to a new country can be challenging and unsettling for recruits and their families. We made sure our new team members received a warm welcome and support to settle into their new roles quickly. We are grateful our international recruits chose Edison as the place to build their New Zealand careers.
