Deep experience, quiet confidence, and a positive mindset are strengths Steven brings to his work as a Senior Project Manager. His story shows the value of backing yourself and embracing change.
I started out as a line mechanic, just like my father and uncles. After 18 years in the field, I moved into the office, taught myself AutoCAD, and began managing jobs end to end. At the time, there wasn’t really a project management function, so I helped shape it. After transitioning into Project Management, I ranked in the top three students across NZ in my PMI course, which I’m really proud of.
I spent 23 years at my previous company. Most people thought I’d never leave. My dad worked there for 47 years. But I had the courage to make a change. Meeting Dave Webb helped me take that final step. I’ve never looked back.
The people make this workplace great. Edison genuinely looks after its staff, and that extends to our partners and families. I’ve worked on some high-pressure projects, and being acknowledged for the time away from home really matters.
The culture keeps us connected, even though we’re based all over the country. The Edison weekend is one of the ways they bring everyone together, and it’s those small things that make a big difference.
I moved from distribution to transmission, from low voltage to 660kV systems. That was a huge leap. Edison supported and backed me to take it on. I knew there were people I could call if I needed help, and that made a big difference. I felt confident and positive about tackling the opportunity I was given.
Now I’ve worked across both distribution and transmission. From lines running through the hills to substation upgrades, I’ve broadened my knowledge and grown technically.
Don’t overthink it. Just do it. Back yourself. I’ve had people call me since I made the change, asking if I had regrets. I don’t. I’m where I’m meant to be, doing work I believe in.
