Patrick Wilson's career has come full circle. Starting as a line mechanic and returning to the electricity industry decades later, his passion for learning, teamwork, and helping others has never changed.
My first job was as a line mechanic, before I studied electrical engineering and worked as a thermal operator trainee at Huntly Power Station. Over time, I worked across several industries, including pulp and paper and healthcare, but I always knew I’d come back to electricity. It’s where my passion is.
One of the things that surprises people most is the range of projects I’ve worked on. From generation to transmission and distribution, the diversity keeps things interesting and gives me new opportunities to learn and grow.
It’s the people. We have a great mix of personalities here, and the conversations go beyond work. We talk about life, share experiences, and support one another. It feels genuine.
I’m also one of three volunteer firefighters at Edison, and I really value the support we get to respond to callouts when needed. That understanding and flexibility says a lot about the company.
The value that resonates most for me is the can-do attitude. It’s about helping where you can, and finding solutions even when you don’t have all the answers. That’s how I like to work, and it fits perfectly with Edison’s culture.
The diverse and interesting range of work we do helps me continue to develop. After being away from the industry, I’ve realised that my passion lies in electricity. It is changing so fast, and it’s exciting to be part of that again. There are so many opportunities arising from our country’s electrification goals and advances in technology.
Try different things and build experience in and outside the sector. Every perspective helps you see a complete view of Project Management. A mix of experiences makes you stronger and more adaptable.
