Olga Shkumat, Design Engineer | My Edison Experience

Olga Shkumat has always loved mathematics and problem-solving. After beginning her engineering career overseas, she has built a new chapter in New Zealand with Edison, where support, trust, and belonging make all the difference.

Finding my path

I’ve always enjoyed maths and physics, and my parents encouraged me to study engineering. My first role was as a design engineer, and I knew I’d found the right fit. It’s a field that constantly challenges you to think and improve.

It’s still not common to see many women in engineering here in New Zealand. Back home in Russia, there were more women in this field, so I noticed the difference when I moved. Being different has made me more independent and confident. It has pushed me to reach new levels and back myself.

Why I enjoy working at Edison

Starting a new career in a new language and culture was daunting, but the team made it easier. Edison has such a supportive, family-like culture. Because it’s a smaller company, everyone knows and trusts each other. The team leaders are amazing and they help us grow, especially those of us who have come from overseas.

What the Edison values mean to me

For me, the Can-do Attitude stands out. There are always challenges, but the key is to take them step by step and get it done. Even when it feels scary at first, that’s how you build confidence, and having a team that backs you makes all the difference.

Growing my career

I learn a lot from meeting new people and working directly with clients. Our leaders trust us to handle those conversations ourselves, which helps us grow professionally and build a reputation in a small industry.

I’ve also studied project management at AUT and completed a Master’s in Project Management, so I’m excited to keep developing my career in that direction.

Advice for future engineers

Keep learning. Read, ask questions, and never be afraid to seek advice. Talk to smart people and don’t be afraid to ask “silly” questions. The knowledge you gain helps you understand the details so you can master this profession.
