Les Pepper, Lead Project Engineer | My Edison Experience

With more than 45 years in the power industry, Les Pepper has done it all. At Edison, he’s found the perfect balance between technical work, mentoring, and adventure.

Finding the right fit

I have known the team at Edison since their early days and have always admired the quality of their work. When I decided to change careers three years ago, joining Edison was an easy choice for me. I wanted a technical role that kept me connected to the plant, and that’s exactly what I found. My work encompasses hydroelectric generation plants and infrastructure sites, as well as site work at substations. Advisory services are experiencing particularly rapid growth, so I have a great mix of hands-on project management, engineering support and asset management.

A career full of surprises

People are often surprised to learn about the variety of my role. It covers project management, contract oversight, procurement, asset management, and advisory work. What might surprise them even more is my often-daily commute. I ride a foldable orange e-bike down the access tunnel to reach the underground Rangipo Power Station near Tūrangi. Petrol vehicles aren’t allowed, so it’s me, my bike, and my laptop on my back. Some even call me “E-bike Man.”

Why I enjoy working at Edison

Being back on site is a real highlight. I love the variety. One day, I’m deep in site project work, and the next, I’m immersed in asset management. Working from my home office in Taupō suits me perfectly. I have views of the Waikato River and trout swimming by. Being located here keeps me close to clients and lets me get things done. I also get to travel across New Zealand for some fascinating projects.

The team culture here is fantastic. I enjoy mentoring younger engineers. They often just “ring Les” for advice, and I’m always happy to help.

Our values feel natural

Edison’s values are central to how I work. I earn trust by consistently operating with respect and integrity, and I will do what it takes to meet the agreed timeline on every task. Being dependable is really valued by our clients.

Always learning

Edison supports me in leading complex projects and contributing to industry forums, such as the NZ Hydropower Group and the Electricity Engineers’ Association (EEA) Asset Management Group. Staying connected with trends and people across the sector keeps me learning every day.

Advice for engineers starting out

Thirdly, step into leadership roles early if you’re interested, and never stop learning. Lastly, and most importantly, enjoy the work and the places it takes you.
