Dave Rodgers, Senior Project Manager | My Edison Experience

Dave enjoys his Senior Project Management role at Edison because it is about people, relationships, and consistently delivering on what you say you will.

From the Tools to Project Leadership

I didn’t originally plan to become a Project Manager. My first ambition was to become an architect, but being an appliance technician with the Wanganui Rangitikei Power Board took me in a different direction. I went on to gain my electrician registration, worked alongside line crews in the electricity distribution sector, and later moved into industrial roles alongside pulp mills, sawmills, and early work with Electrix, maintaining Transpower’s assets.

Seeing the industry from the ground up gave me a real appreciation for the delivery side of the work. Getting projects done well, meeting client expectations, and building strong working relationships. That’s what led me into project management, bringing together technical experience, people, and the satisfaction of delivering good outcomes.

A Role Built Around People

Most people assume project management in this industry is highly technical, but in reality, project management is about working with people. A big part of the role at Edison is planning, coordinating, mentoring, and keeping everyone aligned. There’s also the commercial side: managing budgets, tracking progress, and ensuring everything is delivered as it should be.

You also need to be adaptable. Every Edison project is different, with its own challenges, personalities, and constraints. That’s what I enjoy about it. You’re not just repeating the same process. You’re working through problems with different teams and finding the best way forward each time.

Why Edison

What stands out to me at Edison is the way people support each other. There’s a genuine willingness across the business to share knowledge and bring others into their networks. You’re trusted to deliver, and you’re never left to figure things out on your own.

That balance makes a big difference. You’ve got the space to take ownership, but you’ve also got the backing of the wider team when you need it. It creates an environment where you can build confidence, keep developing, and focus on delivering quality outcomes for clients.

It is a place where strong relationships, practical experience, and a can-do mindset are genuinely valued, which makes it a rewarding place to grow your career.

Also at Edison there are always opportunities to step into something new. Whether that’s working with different clients, tackling unfamiliar challenges, or strengthening different parts of your skill set, that’s what keeps the role interesting and keeps me improving.

Values That Align with Mine

The values at Edison align closely with how I like to work. For me, the key Edison values are integrity and having a can-do attitude. Communicating clearly, following through on what you say you’ll do, and focusing on solutions rather than problems is part of the culture.

These values and this approach builds trust, both within the team and with clients. Strong relationships are built over time, and consistency matters.

Advice for Future Project Managers

Be open and flexible and be prepared to adapt. Focus on building strong fundamentals and learn as much as you can from the people around you. Being around the right people makes a big difference.

Stay curious too. That’s how you keep growing.
