Mobile Substation Comes To Life
3 years from conception to delivery, Transpower's new mobile substation became operational at Murchison in November 2013. Edison Consulting Group is proud to be part of this leading edge project.
Edison’s role on this project was to manage the initial livening and commissioning of the mobile substation. Murchison was chosen as immediately following the commissioning, the mobile substation was needed allowing project work to be undertaken on the existing substation. Our role included being involved in the planning, risk mitigation and eventual witnessing of testing and commissioning.
The largest in New Zealand weighing 70 tonnes, the mobile substation can be carried on two 17m trailers and easily transported around the country to where it is needed, when it is needed. As seen in Murchison the use of the substation will minimise disruption to mainly rural communities by keeping them connected and supplied while Transpower undertakes maintenance work on smaller 110kV sites. Sites at Tekapo A, National Park, Ongarue and Mataroa are all set to immediately benefit from use of the mobile substation.

Seismic Resiliance and Network Asset Protection
Edison's simple and proactive approach is helping our clients navigate both the 2004 Building Act and 1991 Resource Management Act when it comes to Earthquake Prone Buildings.
Owners and operators of electrical generation, transmission and distribution assets have become increasingly aware of the at risk environment we live in due to seismic activity. Post the 2011 Canterbury seismic events the mitigation of seismic risk has become incresingly urgent. Improved Design Capabilities
A growing design team coupled with some clients requiring designs produced to the IEC 61346 standard required Edison to undertake an assessment of software suites that would enable us to improve our delivery. Following a 3 month trial we have now installed Electdes CAD design suite. The Electdes software works alongside AutoCAD providing a one stop shop in terms of drawing document management, smart technology, materials management and delivery of what the staff in the field want.
The software purchase, training and implementation while a reasonable investment for a company of our size, Design Manager Dave Lowe believes the gain in improved design delivery warrants the expense. "Having completed specialised training, the design team are focusing on developing client specific profiles and libraries."
